How to Clean Your Washing Machine in 30 Minutes or Less

Your washing machine works hard to keep your clothes clean, but what about giving it a little TLC in return? Over time, detergent buildup, mold, and grime can accumulate, making your washer less efficient and even leading to unpleasant odors. Don’t worry—cleaning your washing machine is quick and easy! Here’s how to clean your washing machine in 30 minutes or less:

What You’ll Need:

  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Microfiber cloth or sponge
  • Toothbrush (optional for tough spots)
  • A towel or rag

Step 1: Start with an Empty Machine

Make sure your washing machine is completely empty before you begin. This is key to cleaning it thoroughly and avoiding any damage.

Step 2: Run a Hot Cycle with Vinegar

Pour 2 cups of white vinegar directly into the drum of the washing machine (skip the detergent drawer for this step). Set your washer to the hottest setting and run a full wash cycle. The vinegar works wonders for breaking down soap scum, mineral deposits, and mildew, leaving your machine fresh and clean.

Step 3: Scrub the Detergent Drawer

While the vinegar is doing its magic, it’s time to tackle the detergent drawer (where detergent, fabric softener, and bleach go). Pull out the drawer and soak it in warm water with a little vinegar to loosen up any buildup. Use a toothbrush or sponge to scrub away any grime. Rinse well and set aside to dry.

Step 4: Run a Second Cycle with Baking Soda

Once the vinegar cycle finishes, add ½ cup of baking soda directly into the drum of your washing machine. Run another hot cycle. Baking soda helps neutralize odors and further helps break down any remaining residue.

Step 5: Wipe Down the Drum, Door, and Seal

After the second cycle finishes, grab a microfiber cloth or sponge to wipe down the inside of the drum, the door, and the rubber seal. Be sure to check around the door gasket for any trapped lint, detergent, or mold. Use a toothbrush to get into the nooks and crannies. This will remove any lingering dirt and grime.

Step 6: Clean the Filter

Some washing machines have a filter that traps lint and debris. If yours does, check the owner’s manual to locate it and remove any trapped particles. Clean the filter by running it under warm water and gently scrubbing with a cloth if necessary.

Step 7: Leave the Door Open

Once you've wiped down everything and cleaned all parts, leave the washing machine door open for a couple of hours to allow it to dry out completely. This helps prevent any musty odors from forming, as moisture can lead to mold and mildew buildup.

Why Cleaning Your Washer Matters

Regularly cleaning your washing machine not only improves its performance but also extends its lifespan. It helps maintain the quality of your clothes, removes odors, and prevents any unwanted buildup that can impact your machine’s efficiency. Plus, it only takes 30 minutes! A clean washer is a happy washer—and so are the clothes it cleans!
