At Princess Laundry, we understand that your delicate garments require extra care when washing. Whether it’s lace lingerie, silk blouses, or fine-knit sweaters, these items can easily become damaged in the wash if not treated properly. While specialized laundry bags are an excellent option, did you know that a simple pillowcase can do the trick, too?
In this blog, we’ll show you how to use a pillowcase to protect your delicates in the wash, so your favorite pieces stay looking as good as new.
Delicate fabrics like silk, lace, wool, and chiffon require a gentler wash cycle compared to more durable fabrics like cotton or polyester. When washed without protection, delicates can become stretched out, torn, or lose their shape. Zippers, buttons, and other embellishments can catch on other items in the wash, leading to snagging or even permanent damage.
To prevent these issues, it’s important to either hand wash or use a protective method when machine washing delicate items. That’s where using a pillowcase can help.
Using a pillowcase to protect your delicates is an easy, cost-effective solution that requires no special equipment—just a clean pillowcase! Here’s how you can do it:
Select a pillowcase that is large enough to fit your delicate items comfortably. A standard-size pillowcase works well for smaller garments like lingerie, tights, or silk blouses. For larger items, such as a delicate sweater, you may need a larger pillowcase, like one from a king-sized pillow.
Tip: Make sure the pillowcase is made from a breathable fabric like cotton or linen. Avoid using pillowcases with zippers, buttons, or any type of embellishment that could damage your clothes during the wash.
Turn your delicate garments inside out before placing them in the pillowcase. This helps protect the fabric’s surface from friction during the wash. Gently place the garments inside the pillowcase and tie the end of the pillowcase closed using a knot, or tuck it in if it has an opening. Be sure not to overstuff the pillowcase—your clothes need room to move around freely.
Tip: If you're washing a mix of delicate and regular clothing, be sure to wash them separately. This will help avoid any potential damage.
Now that your delicates are safely tucked inside the pillowcase, place the bag in the washing machine. Always select the gentle or delicate cycle on your washing machine to ensure a slow and careful wash. Use cold water for most delicate fabrics (hot water can cause shrinking or damage), and opt for a mild detergent that’s specifically formulated for delicate clothing.
Tip: Avoid using fabric softeners, as they can coat delicate fabrics and reduce their softness over time.
Once the wash is complete, remove the pillowcase and carefully take out your delicates. Avoid wringing or twisting the fabric, as this can distort its shape. For most delicates, air drying is the safest option.
If you're drying delicate fabrics in a dryer, set it to a low-heat or air-only cycle, and use a mesh bag for extra protection. However, line drying or laying the clothes flat to dry is generally best to preserve their shape and fabric integrity.
While using a pillowcase is a great solution for most delicates, here are a few more tips for keeping your fine garments in top condition:
Washing delicate items doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Using a pillowcase is a simple and effective way to protect your fine garments, whether you're washing lingerie, silk tops, or wool sweaters. With these basic steps, you can preserve your clothes’ shape, color, and texture for longer, while avoiding costly damage from improper washing.
