When it comes to doing laundry, there’s no shortage of advice—some passed down for generations, some found online, and some just plain myths. At Princess Laundry, we’ve heard it all! But which laundry hacks actually work, and which are just wasting your time? The Princess Laundry team is here to debunk these laundry myths.
Using extra detergent doesn’t make your clothes any cleaner. In fact, it can leave behind a soapy residue that traps dirt and bacteria, making your clothes feel stiff and look dull. Always measure detergent according to the load size and your washing machine’s recommendations.
While hot water can help dissolve grease, it can also set protein-based stains (like blood and sweat) into fabric. Cold water is usually the safest choice for stain removal, as it helps lift stains without causing them to set permanently.
Modern detergents are formulated to work effectively in cold water. Washing in cold water saves energy, prevents shrinking and fading, and still gets your clothes fresh and clean.
While bleach can whiten clothes, overuse weakens fabric fibers and can cause yellowing over time. A better alternative? Try adding a cup of white vinegar or baking soda to the wash for a natural, fabric-friendly whitening boost.
Too many dryer sheets can coat your clothes and dryer with a waxy residue, reducing absorbency (especially in towels). One or two sheets are plenty for a fresh, static-free load.
Overwashing jeans can cause them to fade and wear out faster. Unless they’re visibly dirty or have an odor, you can wear them multiple times before washing. Spot clean when necessary and wash in cold water to preserve the fabric.
Many “dry clean only” items can actually be hand-washed with a gentle detergent. Always check the care label, but for delicate fabrics like silk and wool, a gentle wash at home may be just as effective as professional dry cleaning.
It’s not the washing machine that shrinks your clothes—it’s usually high heat from the dryer. To avoid shrinking, air-dry delicate fabrics or use a low-heat setting.
Laundry doesn’t have to be a guessing game! By knowing what really works and what’s just a myth, you can keep your clothes looking great while saving time, money, and effort. Whether you need wash-and-fold service, dry cleaning, or professional stain removal, we’ve got you covered!
